He didn’t demand that she cook or clean. He hoped for engagement

He didn’t demand that she cook or clean. He hoped for engagement. For some gesture of “”togetherness.”” He asked her to help organize the closet — she glanced at her phone: “”Oh, I have to run to the salon, you’ll manage perfectly on your own.”” He asked to move the food delivery to tomorrow — “”No, I’m in the mood for pasta and dessert tonight.”” He asked her to stay home — “”Come on, come with me, it would do you good to step out of your shell.”” He went. He paid. He returned exhausted, and in the sink stood the takeaway containers that were waiting for him, just like everything else.

In the third week, they had their most honest conversation. He came home from work, tired, his head throbbing. She was standing in front of the mirror, debating which restaurant to choose — “”they have divine steak there”” or “”there’s a new pasta place here.”” He said: “”I want a home. Soup. Silence. I want us to be us, not a check and a waiter.”” She raised her eyebrows: “”You’re 56, but you act like you’re 80. You’re great, but I need life — bright, sparkling. I’m not interested in cooking soup or folding towels. I’m interested in emotions.”” He replied: “”And I’m interested in a person with whom I don’t have to buy emotions.””

The next day, she packed her makeup bag and a few dresses. She said without anger: “”We are just too different. You are about the home, I am about the city. You are about silence, I am about noise. Don’t be mad at me.”” He wasn’t. He helped her carry the suitcase to the door. She waved her hand and left quickly, as if afraid she might change her mind.

These past three weeks, I’ve finally been eating properly. I set the table for two — out of habit — and immediately removed the extra plate. I looked at my phone: not a single “”did you order?””, not a single “”what should I wear?””. Just silence. But in this silence, suddenly, there was room for me. I don’t think she’s a bad person. Her truth is movement, brightness, people, music. My truth is home, conversations without background noise, a simple dinner, and someone asking, “”how was your day?””. We weren’t faking it; it was just that our needs were too different to merge into a “”we”” under one roof.

Now, in the evenings, I hear the kettle boiling again, and I feel the fatigue fading away. I’m organizing the closet again, changing a lightbulb, fixing the wobbly chair — and I’m in no rush. And yet, sometimes I catch myself placing two glasses on the table. The habit of waiting — it’s slowly fading away. I realized something important: loneliness isn’t cured by the presence of another person in the room. It’s cured by closeness that you can’t buy with delivery or get by reserving a table. Closeness is when you aren’t afraid to stay home and be yourself. When “”we”” is built not on a restaurant bill, but on a willingness to share simple evenings, small worries, and someone else’s fatigue.

I am 56, she is 42. We only lived together for three weeks. It was enough to stop confusing noise with life. And perhaps one day, someone will appear beside me who isn’t afraid of soup and silence. But for now, I am learning not to mistake emptiness for freedom and not to agree to company at any cost.
