I Can’t Believe I Ended Up Raising Children Like That

Published

on

A year has passed since I found myself alone. After my wifes funeral, it took some time for the fog of grief to clear. As I started getting on with things and trying to adjust to life on my own, I quickly realised that, alongside loneliness, I had another pressing issue: my money was running out alarmingly fast. Ive always been carefulliving simply, rarely indulging myselfbut there always seem to be unexpected costs cropping up, whether its prescriptions or trips to the GP.

My wife and I raised two children, and we always did whatever we could to support them. We gave them every spare pound we had, helping with everything from their home deposits to countless bits and pieces along the way. Much of what we invested in our own home ended up easing things for our childrens families. I often wonder how my destiny was meant to unfold, but, like most, our house will pass on to my son and daughter unless I someday choose differently in a willwhich I have no intention of doing. Theyre educated and sensible enough to know exactly what property is worth, and they know full well the implications of inheriting it.

A couple of times, Ive tried to hint to my children that Im struggling to make ends meet. If only they could cover the ever-increasing utility bills, I wouldnt have to worry about being penniless before my next pension payment. My daughter, Emily, pretends not to catch my drift, and as for my son, Danielwell, his wife Julia manages the family finances, so my suggestions and hints seem to fall on deaf ears.

I have a fairly good idea of what both Daniel and Emily earn; Im honestly glad for them, glad they can afford cars, holidays abroad, and that my grandchildren are never short for pocket money. Sometimes I see my grandkids hand over fifty quid as if its nothingsums that would take up the bulk of my monthly pensionand I find myself wondering where we went wrong. Did we really raise children so indifferent to their parents hardship? My wife and I always did our bit for our own mums and dadsregular visits, bags full of groceries, buying their medicine, covering their healthcare costs.

A friend of mine suggested that she plans to move in with her own son or daughterwithout even seeking their permissionand just rent out her flat to cover expenses. I really dont want to go down that route, but unless another conversation with Daniel and Emily changes things for the better, I may be left with no choice. My pension simply wont stretch any further, and every bit of savings I had has already gone to help my children. In the end, I suppose Im learning that sometimes the greatest kindness you can show your children is to let them see your vulnerability, but also to expect responsibility from them in return.
