My Son’s New Girlfriend Doesn’t Know the Basics… What Should I Do? A Mother Navigates In-Law Challen…

My mother-in-law passed away a few years back, and after we laid her to rest, I made myself two promises: first, that when it comes to the dead, best to remember the good and let the bad rest with them; and second, that no matter who my son brought home as a wife, Id never become the sort of mother-in-law she was.

Its easy to make bold declarations, but life has a way of testing your resolve.

My only son, Henry, turned twenty-five this year and invited his girlfriend home at the start of summer.

I stayed true to my promise and welcomed the young woman with an open heart and, admittedly, a cautious outlook.

I vowed I wouldnt sneer or nitpick, nor would I try to teach her how to live her lifemy late mother-in-law did all that, and it drove a wedge between us until we could hardly stand one another.

Above all, I dont want to lose either Henry or his girlfriend. Truth be told, I genuinely enjoy treating them both: making their tea just the way they like it, remembering who takes sugar and who doesnt, fussing over them at breakfast on weekends. During the week, Im busy, but at the weekend, I turn a blind eye to chores and enjoy their company.

Other times, I find a reason to slip awayoff to the lakes with my husband, visiting a friend, or popping over to my mums to make chutney or pickle onions, leaving the two lovebirds alone to enjoy the house.

Still, something recently happened that was both comical and a little unsettling, and I feel compelled to jot it down. The other evening, my sons girlfriend returned home quite chuffed about a new blouse she picked up on the way back from her job.

It wasnt particularly pricey, and shed bagged it for even less since it was missing a button.

She tried it on, spun aboutthe blouse looked lovely on her, no doubt about it. The next day, Friday, we were off to visit some friends, and I asked if shed like to wear her new top. She hesitated and said she couldntbecause she couldnt sew on the button.

Honestly, I blurted out in surpriseI rather thought every 22-year-old woman would at least have a needle, thread, and some buttons about.

And tomorrow, my dear, what then? How will she mind a home or a family, or handle the everyday bits and bobs if a missing button throws her completely?

Now Im at a lossshould I just sew the button on without a second thought, show her how its done, or simply leave it beif she wants the blouse, shell sort it, and if not, it can sit buttonless in her wardrobe.

One things certain: I refuse to be a bad mother-in-law. Ive seen enough of that in my lifetime, and its nothing I care to repeat.

Todays lesson for me? Sometimes, the best thing you can offer is patience and a steady hand, not criticism. And maybe, just maybe, I could teach a little needle and thread without turning the lesson into a lecture.
