Mark Returned Home to Find His Wife Missing—Moments Later, He Discovered His Son at the Neighbor’s House…

Published

on

Matthew arrived home after a long day, only to discover that his wife was conspicuously absent. The house was eerily quiet; not a giggle, not a peep, not even the tell-tale crash of Lego bricks courtesy of their one-year-old son. Matthews worry began its steady climb up Mount Anxiety.
Determined to get to the bottom of this domestic mystery, he marched over to the next-door neighbour, Mrs. Potter, to inquire if shed seen his wayward wife. Before he could even knock, Mrs. Potter opened the door, a cheery smile on her face and, to his astonishment, little Oliver perched on her hip looking perfectly content.
Turns out, Matthews wife had dropped their son off with Mrs. Potter for something urgent and dashed out like she was late for tea with the Queen.
Now, while Matthew fancied himself reasonably experienced in the art of nappy changing and the dark magic of getting a toddler to eat peas, he couldnt help but wonder what on earth couldve prompted his wife to vanish so suddenly. On the plus side, shed been thoughtful enough to leave him a plate of shepherds pie in the microwaveso, not a total abandonment.
As the minutes turned into hoursthirty, sixty, one hundred and twenty, fast forwarding to half the day is goneMatthews nerves were shot. Hed rung his wifes mobile half a dozen times, each call unceremoniously dumped into voicemail purgatory. Oliver was eventually, mercifully, coaxed into bed, but Matthew found himself pacing and peering through curtains like an untrained amateur sleuth.
Then, at long last, the phone rang. Matthew, heart leaping, answered in record time, greeting his wife with a barrage of anxious questioning: Where are you? Are you all right? Did you at least remember to buy milk? But to his deep dismay, she sidestepped every query. Instead, her voice was calm and flat: she had no intention of coming home and informed him, with all the delicacy of a parking warden, that hed now be responsible for Oliver, full stop.
Shell-shocked and a bit wobbly, Matthew remained glued to the phone, half-convinced this was a wind-up. But alas, he was left with the sobering new title of Single Dadmaster of both cuddles and crust-cutting, with not a clue if he should be making packed lunches or running for the hills.
