Those We Hold Closest to Our Hearts Can Suddenly Reveal Their True Nature for Unexpected Reasons – That’s Exactly What Happened to Me, as in an Instant They Became Strangers.

So, not long ago, I finally bought myself a flat in London and I was absolutely bursting to share the good news with my familymy mum, dad, and my younger sister. But honestly, their reaction really caught me off guard. Flats in London can be ridiculously pricey, so it took me years to save up enough. I was so tired of moving from place to place and dealing with all sorts of unpredictable landlords that I decided to bite the bullet, take out a mortgage, and just get a place of my own. I already had some savings for a deposit and could just about afford the repayments, but it also meant I wouldn’t be able to help my family out as generously as I used to.

For nearly five years, I’d been paying all of my sister Emilys university fees and sending her some extra cash for pocket money, purely out of love and the belief that family should look after each other. When I invited my parents and Emily round to see my new place, they didn’t really bat an eyelid at firstthey thought it was just another place I was renting. But when I told them Id actually bought it, I was taken aback by how little excitement or even congratulations there was.

When I mentioned that Id have to cut back on what I could send them due to my mortgage, all hell broke loose: they were furious and made a huge fuss out of it. I was labelled as selfish, with mum moaning that theyd have to dig into the money theyd set aside for Emilys education. Meanwhile, Emily piped up and said I still needed to keep my promise to buy her a new phoneeven though my own situation had changed. It was in that awkward moment I started to realise they only ever visited or called me when they needed something, always asking for money and never really bothering to ask how I was or what I wanted.

As I sat there just trying to process everything, I didn’t feel resigned so much as genuinely puzzled. I started to wonder when exactly theyd stopped seeing me as a loved member of the family and started seeing me as some sort of cash machine. I even questioned if it had always been like this, and that realisation left me with a real jumble of emotions as I tried to make sense of our relationship.
