How I Managed to Embarrass My Mother-in-Law. She Probably Still Remembers It to This Day

This story unfolded right at the beginning of my married life, when my husband and I had just tied the knot.

From the start, I noticed something unusual but brushed it off at the time. This oddness wasnt about my husbandwho, by the way, is still the best partner I could ask forbut about his mother, my mother-in-law.

It all began at our wedding: she looked as grim and cross as if she were attending a funeral and not her son’s celebration. Afterwards, her behaviour stayed peculiar. Because we were young and didnt have a flat of our own yet, we had to stay with her.

The moment we crossed her doorstep, she greeted us with a peculiar kindness that nearly fooled me. I assumed her stern demeanour at the wedding came down to feeling a bit unwell, perhaps. But behind her half-hearted smile lay some passive hostility mixed with sly jibes. Sometimes, shed drop veiled criticisms just to get under my skin.

As an example, shed get up in the middle of the night to rewash the dishes Id already washed the previous evening. One night, I caught her in the act and asked what she was doing. She gave me an innocent look and simply said she was cleaning dirty plates. Thats when I began doubting her sinceritydoes that mean my dishes are always dirty?

For a long time, though, I took her pointed remarks as motherly advice. Id even confide in her about personal issues with my husband, believing she genuinely cared.

One day, a close friend of minewho happened to work as a driver at my mother-in-laws companystarted hearing all sorts of gossip about our family from her colleagues. Apparently, my husband was painted as a pauper, and I was cast as a villain set on snatching my mother-in-law’s flat.

That was when I finally realised she was no ally, but a hidden adversary.

She had this fervent obsession with cleanliness; her house always gleamed like an operating theatre. She expected the same standards from me and my husband. We tried our best, but it was never enough for her.

And when she went away on business for two weeks, she insisted we keep the flat spotless in her absence, warning us that even the tiniest speck on the carpet or the odd hair in the bathroom would send her into a panic. Dirty dishes could bring on a full-blown crisis, so whenever she was around, my husband and I burnt ourselves out keeping everything perfect.

Naturally, for the two weeks she would be away, we planned on relaxing a bit and only tidying up just before her return. She, picking up on our plan, deliberately gave us the wrong return date and meant to turn up when we were least likely to have tidied up. Not only that, she planned to bring her friends along to see me at my supposed worst.

But thanks to my aforementioned friend, I found out about her clever little scheme and was fuming. Determined to foil her plot, I scrubbed the place till it sparkled and decided to wait and see what would happen.

She arrived, parading in with a gaggle of friends and a driver grinning from ear to ear. Quietly and with a smug smirk, she turned the key in the lock and ushered them inside like a travelling circus troupe.

She was genuinely stunned when they walked in and saw the flat cleaned to the highest standardeven higher than her own. Her friends exchanged glances and whispered amongst themselves, while I calmly wiped my brow and casually put away the vacuum cleaner, remarking, So, where did you find such a spotless rug?

My mother-in-law was at her wits end. She scowled, poking around the corners in the hope of finding some fault. I was silently cheering myself onYou wont find a thing, not a single thing!with my fists clenched.

That day, my mother-in-law was properly embarrassed, and her reputation at work took a hit; people stopped believing her stories, and quite a few began siding with me. Id dealt her pride a serious blow, and even though seventeen years have passed, Im sure she still remembers it.
